You've never needed a lawyer before. Now, you don't know where to turn and think you want to speak to one. How do you know what to ask?  What should you be looking for?

The decision of when to speak to an attorney is really up to you. I will give you a few things to keep in mind about timing. I will say the general rule is the earlier the better. If you are like me, I want to know what my rights are in a situation and the options I have immediately. That way, I can then make an informed decision as to the direction I want to go. I believe this applies to when to speak to an attorney as well as when to hire one.

Let’s use the example of a car wreck for now. If you were in a wreck and there is only property damage. After a few days, you feel fine physically and mentally, then you probably don’t need a lawyer. You can handle the property damage claim with the insurance company on your own.

Another example: let’s say you were in a wreck and went to the emergency room. Then, about a week later you feel fine. Maybe you even went to a chiropractor visit or two. Your total medical bills are $1,000 and you didn’t lose any work. You likely can handle that claim on your own with the insurance company.

Even in those two examples I listed above, it doesn’t hurt to give us a call to make sure everything is fine. You have to remember that the insurance company is not your friend. They may seem like it, but they are in the business of making a profit, not paying out claims.

The other end of the spectrum is when there is a serious injury or death involved. Typically, there is a lot of evidence at the scene that needs to be preserved or witnesses that need to be interviewed right away. The longer you wait, the more the helpful and necessary evidence disappears. The insurance companies know this and will seem as nice as possible, dragging their feet in order to prolong your visit with an attorney. In any serious injury or death case, it is best to speak with a trial lawyer right away.
