All-Girls Montana ‘Behavior Modification’ Cult Creates Lasting Negative Effects on Attendees
Girls who have attended Clearview Horizon are speaking out and demanding that it be shut down after experiencing abuse and neglect while attending.
What is Clearview Horizon?
Clearview Horizon is an all-girls behavior modification program. Teenage girls are sent to the Clearview Girls Academy because their parents feel like they cannot offer the care and support that their daughters need. Clearview Horizon tell parents that they can help young women with any behavioral issues including cutting, depression, eating disorders, and ‘acting out’ sexually. Parents are promised that their daughter will enjoy the support of the staff, extra-curricular activities, and therapy sessions that are offered. Clearview Horizon is often seen as a light at the end of the tunnel for struggling girls and their parents. No one expected that the “therapy” provided by Clearview Horizon staff would actually cause more harm than good.
What Kind of “Therapy” Do These Girls Experience?
News outlets, social media, and our office have heard numerous stories about the traumatizing so-called-therapy offered through Clearview Horizon. Collectively, girls have reported experiences of medical neglect such as being taken off of medication without the supervision of a doctor. The program claims that all of their staff are certified therapists or counselors but many of them are not certified. Some of these counselors made their counseling sessions center around their own past sexual encounters, discussing the girls’ breasts, and touching parts of the girls’ bodies.
Clearview Horizon leaders, Micky Manning and Mike Linderman, mentally and verbally abused the girls throughout their entire stay. One survivor reports that counselors would refer to the girls by calling them their greatest insecurity to “desensitize” them. Punishment came in the form of extensive manual labor outside before being allowed to eat, being put ‘on silence’ (this meant no one could acknowledge your existence), and being the victim of intentional mean comments and social shunning by other attendees at the instruction of counselors.
The Lasting Negative Effects on Survivors
Survivors have told us about the effects that this treatment and the Clearview Horizon program had on their lives. Survivors have been left to feel like the only support system they have is each other because their families have struggled to believe everything they have gone through. They struggle everyday with not knowing who they can and cannot trust and trying to build a normal life with normal relationships. Flashbacks, nightmares, and anxiety attacks in the middle of the day are regular occurrences. Many of these women are seeking treatment and working really hard to unlearn a lot of negative things that were forced on them at Clearview Horizon.
