Buddy Button was almost ready for Halloween. He had picked out a tall witch’s hat, found a pumpkin bucket for his candy, and practiced his biggest smile in the mirror.
But when he took one last look at his costume, he noticed something strange.
His hat had no color.
Neither did his shirt. Or his candy bucket. Even the pumpkins beside him were missing their orange!
“Wait a minute,” Buddy said, turning his bucket upside down. “Where did all the colors go?”
A few pieces of candy tumbled out. Buddy picked up a lollipop and examined its swirl. That was missing its colors, too.
Two friendly ghosts floated over to see what was happening.
“Have you seen any colors around here?” Buddy asked.
The ghosts looked at each other.
“We usually wear white,” one said. “So we might not be much help.”
Buddy giggled. Then he peeked behind the pumpkins, checked under his hat, and looked up at the moon. There were plenty of places for colors to go, but he couldn’t find a single one.
A little bat fluttered down beside him.
“Have you tried asking an artist?” the bat asked.
“An artist?” Buddy said. “Do you know one?”
The bat pointed right out of the page.
“At home, with crayons or markers. Someone who could make your hat any color they wanted.”
Buddy’s floppy ears perked up. He had been so busy looking for his colors that he hadn’t thought about asking someone to help choose them.
“Could my hat be purple?” he asked.
“Of course.”
“Or green?”
“Absolutely.”
“Or striped with every color in the box?”
The bat nodded.
Buddy straightened his hat and settled in beside the pumpkins. The ghosts floated into place, and the bats spread their wings. Everyone was ready.
Now Buddy had something even better than a finished costume: a chance to wear one designed by you.
He gave his biggest smile.
“Will you help me get dressed up for Halloween?”
