On a summer day, a man took a bike ride through his neighborhood in Dallas. Knowing that cyclists are required to obey traffic laws, he stopped for approximately 30 seconds to check for cars and other traffic before crossing the private driveway at the entrance of a country club. Suddenly, a car appeared and How Was the Cyclist Injured in the Car Wreck?
When the reckless driver hit him, the cyclist complained of a headache and pain in his left chest wall and upper arm. The driver immediately took him to a local emergency room, where he was diagnosed with a tear in his muscle fibers, also known as a musculoskeletal strain, and treated for severe scrapes and bleeding on his right knee and left elbow.
Once he was released from the hospital, the cyclist continued to experience pain in his left shoulder and elbow and had a limited range of motion. He saw an orthopedic specialist, who diagnosed him with a sprained rotator cuff and a possible tear and sprain of his elbow. The specialist ordered an MRI to confirm whether or not his left elbow was torn from the car crash.
The cyclist’s MRI of his left shoulder and arm revealed several injuries and problems in the area, specifically in his rotator cuff and shoulder joint. One of the main tendons for lifting the arm had a long diagonal tear. Another rotator cuff tendon was also torn, and even had some areas pulled back. Cartilage that helps stabilize the shoulder joint was also torn. The MRI also revealed that the cyclist’s limited movement and extreme pain was due to a tight and stiff shoulder joint capsule, which was also injured in the wreck. The injuries were so severe that the cyclist needed surgery to repair his left rotator cuff. He also had to undergo physical therapy after the surgery to improve his arm’s range of motion.
