One Round Rock family placed that trust in a YMCA Preschool. In 2025, their little boy was seriously hurt when a caregiver closed a classroom door on his left hand, amputating the tip of his pinky finger.

A Daycare Supervision Failure Changed This Little Boy's Life

Caregivers were moving children in and out of the classroom when one of the adults responsible for supervising the boy became distracted by a conversation through an adjoining classroom doorway.

No one made sure the one-year-old’s hands were safely clear before another caregiver closed the heavy door.

His left pinky was caught, and the force amputated the tip of his finger and damaged his nailbed.

His parents went from expecting an ordinary day at daycare to taking their baby to the hospital for emergency treatment.

At one year old, he could not understand the danger of standing near a doorway. Keeping him safe was the responsibility of his caregivers. Texas daycare rules require caregivers to maintain awareness of the children they supervise and remain free from distractions that take their attention away from them.

Those protections failed this little boy.

In the weeks and months that followed, his family began seeing changes in their son.

He became increasingly afraid of being separated from his mom and struggled with sleep and night terrors. Doors became frightening. When walking through a doorway, he began pulling his hands close to his body as though he had learned he needed to protect them.

Even normal parts of being a toddler became more difficult. He resisted putting his injured hand underwater during baths, and getting dressed could hurt when his damaged nail caught on his sleeve. Because he was naturally left-handed, he also had to rely more on his right hand while playing and completing everyday activities.

His parents were there through every difficult night, every medical appointment, every fearful reaction to a doorway, and every step forward.
