Common Reasons Daycare Video Goes Missing
There are several reasons a daycare may claim footage is unavailable.
Some surveillance systems automatically record over footage after a short period of time. Others may only store video for a few days unless someone saves it. A daycare may also say a camera was not working, the footage was corrupted, or the system did not capture the area where the injury happened.
But when a child is seriously injured, the daycare should understand that video matters. If footage disappears after a parent asks questions, that creates a serious problem for the family trying to understand the truth.
What Missing Video Can Mean for Parents
Missing video can damage trust quickly.
Parents may already be trying to make sense of an injury, an incident report, or a daycare’s explanation that does not feel complete. When the daycare says the video is gone, families are left with even more questions.
Missing or deleted footage may raise concerns about:
- Whether the daycare acted quickly to preserve evidence
- Whether the explanation given to parents was accurate
- Whether the staff were properly supervising children
- Whether the daycare is being honest about what happened
Even if the footage was lost due to an automated system, parents are allowed to ask why it was not saved after a serious injury.
What Should Parents Do if the Daycare Says the Video Was Deleted?
If your child was injured and the daycare says the video is unavailable, document everything.
Write down when you asked for the footage, who you spoke with, and what you were told. Save emails, text messages, incident reports, photos of your child’s injuries, and medical records.
You can also ask whether other cameras captured part of the incident. Hallway, playground, entryway, or classroom cameras may show what happened before or after your child was hurt.
Most importantly, do not wait too long to ask questions. Surveillance footage can disappear quickly, and early action can make a major difference.
