Law&Crime Reports Infant Died After Incident at In-Home Daycare

Little Rock police responded to a medical call at a private residence on December 30 after an infant was reported not breathing. The child was transported to a children’s hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

Investigators allege the caregiver became frustrated while changing the infant’s diaper and struck the child’s head against a hardwood floor multiple times. Authorities reported that the infant suffered a skull fracture and multiple brain bleeds as a result of the actions.

The caregiver allegedly told investigators the injuries occurred during this moment of frustration while the infant was under her supervision at the in-home daycare.

Russell Button Addresses Trust and Daycare Safety Concerns

During the Law&Crime interview, Russell Button discussed why cases involving infants in daycare settings are especially devastating for families.

“The first word that comes to mind is betrayal,” Russell Button said. “Parents are working, providing for their families, and trusting that the person caring for their child will protect them when they’re not there. This should never happen.”

Russell explained that families often have limited insight into what happens inside an in-home daycare, which can make it difficult to identify warning signs before a tragedy occurs.

In-Home Daycare Risks and Red Flags for Parents

As discussed during the Law&Crime interview, in-home daycares can present unique risks when they operate without licensing, additional staff, or clear safety protocols. Russell emphasized that parents should ask whether a provider is licensed, how many children are being supervised at once, and whether accountability measures—such as security cameras—are in place.

Russell also noted that situations where one caregiver is responsible for multiple infants and toddlers can quickly become overwhelming without proper support.

Civil Accountability After a Daycare Tragedy

Russell explained that civil cases focus on accountability and prevention. These cases can help families uncover what went wrong, identify safety failures, and push for improvements that protect other children in the future.

Civil claims can also bring attention to broader issues within the childcare system, including gaps in oversight and enforcement that allow unsafe practices to continue.
