Inside the Classroom: What Went Wrong

Court records described by the Rockwall Herald Banner show that the incident began with something small. A cup of milk spilled on the classroom floor. The Saunders’ 3-year-old son tapped his foot in the puddle.

The response was immediate and physical.

A caregiver moved the child across the room and placed him in a time-out area. During that interaction, his head struck a bathroom door, an impact later acknowledged by the caregiver.

The video described in the lawsuit shows the child crying and repeatedly asking to go home as the classroom transitioned to naptime. He was placed on a cot while the caregiver continued routine activities. At multiple points, the caregiver placed a blanket over the child’s head and attempted to close his eyes.

Not long after, the child became limp and unresponsive. Vomit and signs consistent with seizure activity were later observed.

By the time the seriousness of the situation was recognized, a healthy child who had been dropped off at school that morning was experiencing a medical emergency.

A Delayed Emergency With Lasting Consequences

According to the lawsuit, emergency medical services were not called until nearly an hour after the head injury occurred. When first responders arrived, they assisted the child’s breathing before transporting him to a hospital.

Medical imaging revealed a fractured skull, internal bleeding in the brain, and a traumatic brain injury. Due to the severity of his condition, the child was transferred by helicopter to a Dallas hospital, where he spent several days in the pediatric intensive care unit.

For Keisha Saunders, those moments are impossible to forget.

“Galaxy Ranch Private School had us experience a nightmare we can’t wake up from,” she said. “Watching our son lie in that hospital bed, hooked up to machines, fighting to stay alive, is something I will never forget. We trusted Galaxy Ranch Private School and our family will have to deal with the consequences of that broken trust every day.”

Concerns About Discipline, Staffing, and Supervision

The lawsuit also highlights broader concerns about how the classroom was staffed and supervised. According to the filing, the overwhelmed caregiver had been employed at the school for only a few months and was responsible for supervising a classroom operating at maximum capacity without additional assistance.

The lawsuit states that prior concerns about the caregiver were not formally documented or addressed.

State regulators investigated the incident. According to the lawsuit, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission substantiated allegations of abuse and cited the school for multiple violations of state childcare regulations, including the use of prohibited disciplinary methods.
