What the Cameras Revealed Inside the Classroom
According to the lawsuit and as reported by 8 News Now, the Saunders’ toddler was simply tapping his foot in spilled milk when the caregiver reacted with inappropriate discipline. Footage captured her grabbing the child by the arm, dragging him across the classroom, and placing him in a time-out chair located in a blind spot. She later admitted his head collided with an open bathroom door during this interaction.
The surveillance footage also showed the little boy crying and asking to go home while the caregiver ignored him and continued preparing the room for naptime. Later, while he lay on his cot, the caregiver repeatedly covered his head with a blanket. When she tried to force his eyes closed, she discovered he was limp, unresponsive, and showing signs consistent with a seizure.
Despite these clear signs of a medical emergency, about an hour had passed before anyone called for help. By the time emergency responders arrived, the toddler was experiencing multiple seizures and labored breathing. Doctors found a skull fracture and brain bleed so severe that he needed to be airlifted to a Dallas hospital.
Without surveillance footage, the Saunders family may never have learned the truth, especially since the daycare initially told them they did not know what had happened to their son.
A History of Missed Warnings and Safety Failures
8 News Now also highlighted broader concerns about the daycare’s operations. The caregiver responsible for the Saunders’ son had been employed for only three months and was underqualified to supervise a classroom alone.
Even more concerning, she was placed in charge of ten toddlers, which is the maximum number of children Texas allows per caregiver in a room of three-year-olds. Managing ten energetic toddlers requires experience, training, and support. For a new, overwhelmed caregiver working without additional supervision, the risk of unsafe situations increases significantly.
Galaxy Ranch had also received at least one complaint about this caregiver’s behavior before the incident. According to the lawsuit, the daycare failed to document the concern, provide corrective training, or take steps to ensure she was adequately prepared for the role.
State investigators later confirmed multiple violations of childcare laws, including using banned punishment tactics and failing to ensure children were protected from abuse, neglect, or harm.
When ratios are pushed to the limit, and underqualified caregivers are left unsupervised, children face significant and preventable dangers.
Why Surveillance Footage Matters and How BLF Is Helping the Saunders Family
For the Saunders family, the surveillance footage did more than document what happened. It gave them clarity during a moment filled with fear and confusion. When a daycare tells parents they do not know what happened, it leaves families without answers. Camera footage can provide the truth they deserve and allow them to understand how their child was hurt.
The Button Law Firm is working closely with the Saunders family to uncover every detail, demand accountability, and push for stronger safety standards that protect all Texas children. Surveillance cameras can be a powerful tool for preventing harm and ensuring transparency in childcare settings, but only when they cover the entire daycare facility and are monitored frequently and adequately.
