What Happened at This Collin County Daycare?
At the heart of this legal action is a harrowing story of negligence and disregard for a child's well-being. The North Texas mother's 3-year-old daughter, despite clear documentation of a life-threatening fish allergy and the provision of an emergency plan upon enrollment, suffered two severe allergic reactions at Allen Knowledge Beginnings daycare center within four months. In both instances, caregivers at the facility served the toddler fish sticks, which led to anaphylaxis during the second incident in July 2022.
The gravity of the situation cannot be overstated. The child was discovered in distress in the daycare’s bathroom, barely breathing, with a swollen tongue, lips, and face. Though the young child was in this state, the daycare chose not to seek medical help for her, though they are required to by law. Instead, the daycare called the mother, who immediately dialed 911 to get her child emergency medical care. While on the way to the hospital, first responders administered two EpiPens and additional medication to fight the anaphylaxis. They told the child’s mother that had she waited a few more minutes to call for emergency help or even tried to take the child to the hospital herself, the child would have likely passed away from anaphylactic shock.
Even more astonishing was that the daycare advertised itself as being an allergy-safe facility, when, in reality, they did not do anything to prevent the allergic reaction incident from happening. In fact, an independent investigation conducted by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission Child-Care Licensing Division and the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services revealed additional lapses in oversight and adherence to regulations. The daycare center was found to be in violation of state laws by exposing a child to a known allergen, and the child's caregiver lacked proper background checks and training in handling emergencies such as severe allergic reactions.
