How a Simple Moment Turned Into a Medical Crisis

According to the lawsuit and FOX 44’s coverage, the Saunders’ toddler tapped his foot in spilled milk, a harmless and age-appropriate action. Instead of calmly redirecting him, the caregiver responded with force. She grabbed him by the arm, dragged him across the room into a camera blind spot, and placed him in a time-out chair. She later admitted that his head struck an open bathroom door during the interaction.

Surveillance footage showed the child crying and asking to go home. Instead of checking for injuries or comforting him, the caregiver ignored him. Later, as he lay on his cot, she repeatedly covered his head with a blanket. When she attempted to force his eyes shut, she discovered he was limp, unresponsive, and showing signs of seizure activity.

The daycare then failed in one of the most crucial moments. Despite clear signs of a life-threatening emergency, more than an hour passed before anyone called for medical help.

Why Immediate Action Matters in Daycare Emergencies

FOX 44 emphasized what happened next. By the time emergency responders arrived, the toddler was unconscious, vomiting, and experiencing multiple seizures. First responders had to use a manual resuscitation bag to help him breathe. A CT scan at a nearby hospital revealed a skull fracture and brain bleed so severe that he had to be airlifted to a Dallas trauma center and admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit.

When a child experiences head trauma, a delayed response can dramatically worsen the outcome. Required childcare protocols clearly state that caregivers must seek emergency medical attention right away when a child shows signs of head injury, seizure, or unresponsiveness. Galaxy Ranch Private School failed to follow those basic, lifesaving steps.

Warning Signs and Staffing Issues That Should Not Have Been Ignored

FOX 44 also shared findings from state investigators. The caregiver responsible had only been employed for three months and was placed alone with ten toddlers, the maximum ratio allowed by Texas childcare regulations. According to the lawsuit, she was overwhelmed and underqualified to safely supervise such a large group on her own.

Galaxy Ranch had received at least one complaint about her performance prior to the incident, but according to the lawsuit, the daycare did not document it or provide corrective training. Investigators later confirmed violations of multiple childcare laws, including the use of prohibited punishment tactics and failure to ensure children were protected from harm.
