iHeartRadio Highlights The Button Law Firm's Lawsuit
iHeartRadio recently featured the amended lawsuit filed by our team at The Button Law Firm against Trinity Lutheran School, bringing national attention to a case involving the physical and emotional abuse of a 4-year-old girl and the school's repeated failures to protect her.
The lawsuit details months of ignored warning signs, a classroom meltdown that school leadership had been warned could happen, and a series of decisions that placed a young child directly in harm's way. More importantly, it focuses on the responsibility of the school's director and principal to protect the children entrusted to their care.
The Warning Signs Came First
One of the central themes of the lawsuit is that this incident was preventable.
As reported by iHeartRadio, text messages included in the amended petition show the teacher repeatedly warned Trinity Lutheran School's director and principal that she was struggling with her mental health and feared having a breakdown while caring for children. In one message, she described a "meltdown at work" as her "worst nightmare."
Rather than removing her from the schedule, providing the support she needed, or keeping her out of the classroom, the director and principal continued asking her to work and repeatedly placed her back in charge of preschool children.
The amended petition describes months of ignored responsibilities, during which the school failed to recognize the risks, intervene, and protect the children in its care.
The Classroom Meltdown Everyone Had Feared
Eventually, the breakdown the teacher had warned about became reality.
The lawsuit describes the teacher screaming at the young girl, pushing her, pulling her by the arm, dragging her across the classroom, locking her alone inside a dark closet, and threatening to call the police while telling her that her parents wanted her to go to jail.
The little girl cried and screamed for her mother and father as the teacher continued intimidating and humiliating her. Every incident was captured on the school's surveillance cameras.
As highlighted by iHeartRadio, what happened inside the classroom was not simply a loss of patience. It was a frightening series of events that forever changed the life of a young child.
A Family Searching for Answers
The child's mother first realized something was wrong after receiving a voicemail from the teacher about her daughter's behavior that day.
When she questioned the school about the message, the teacher denied leaving it. School leaders later acknowledged that the teacher had yelled at the child, pushed her, and pulled her by the arm.
It was not until the family was shown the surveillance footage that they learned the full extent of what had happened. The amended petition states that the video showed the teacher placing the frightened little girl inside a dark closet while she cried for her parents.
iHeartRadio also highlighted another troubling aspect of the case: school leaders reviewed the surveillance footage on the day of the incident but did not notify the family for five days. The petition further states that hours of surveillance footage from that day are now missing.
Why the Lawsuit Focuses on Trinity Lutheran School
This case is about much more than one teacher's conduct.
Schools have a responsibility to hire qualified staff, respond to warning signs, supervise classrooms, and intervene when children are at risk. The lawsuit states that Trinity Lutheran School failed at each of those responsibilities by continuing to place a struggling teacher in the classroom despite repeated warnings and then failing to act when those fears became reality.
The amended petition also describes a series of decisions made after the incident, including delaying notification to the family and failing to preserve important evidence.
As Russell Button explained in comments featured by iHeartRadio, this case demonstrates what can happen when staffing concerns are placed ahead of child safety.
