A Delayed Emergency Response with Serious Consequences
According to the lawsuit, nearly an hour passed between the moment the child hit his head and the moment Galaxy Ranch contacted emergency services. By then, he was unconscious, had experienced multiple seizures, and was struggling to breathe.
First responders assisted him by using a manual resuscitation bag to help him breathe. A CT scan at a nearby hospital revealed a skull fracture and brain bleed, and he was airlifted to an acute care hospital in Dallas, where he stayed in the pediatric intensive care unit for several days.
Keisha Saunders described the experience as a nightmare that her family will never forget.
Concerns About Classroom Management and Prior Warnings at Galaxy Ranch
KXAN reported that the Saunders family chose Galaxy Ranch because they believed the school had experienced staff and a safe environment. Instead, the lawsuit alleges that the caregiver responsible had only been employed for three months and was left alone to supervise a classroom full of 3-year-olds.
The lawsuit also states that the school had received at least one complaint about this caregiver, but did not document it or provide additional training.
State investigators later substantiated the family’s allegations and cited the daycare for violating childcare laws related to prohibited punishment and failing to ensure children were protected from abuse or neglect.
As attorney Russell Button stated in KXAN’s coverage, what happened was preventable and reflected a chain of poor decisions.
