The Words No Four-Year-Old Should Ever Hear
One of the most heartbreaking parts of the lawsuit is not what happened physically, but what the child was told.
The teacher repeatedly told the young girl that her parents did not want her, threatened to send her to jail, and warned that she would be locked in a "dungeon."
The Law&Crime article highlights that the child was crying for her mother and father while the teacher continued mocking and humiliating her in front of classmates. At one point, another child joined in the taunting after hearing the teacher's comments.
For a preschool-aged child, those words carry enormous weight. Instead of finding comfort from a trusted adult, the lawsuit describes a classroom where fear, embarrassment, and humiliation became part of her day.
The Mistreatment Escalated
The emotional abuse did not end there.
The physical abuse described in our lawsuit was extensive. As highlighted by Law&Crime, the teacher screamed at the child, shoved her, yanked her by the arm, dragged her across the classroom, and locked her alone inside a dark closet for several minutes. The petition also states that the teacher pretended to call 911 while telling the child she would be taken away from her family and sent to jail.
Many of these incidents were captured by the school's surveillance cameras.
The amended petition further states that while the little girl cried for her parents, the teacher continued intimidating and mocking her. Rather than immediately intervening, school leaders later reviewed the surveillance footage but failed to promptly notify her parents or remove the teacher from the classroom.
The Classroom Meltdown Was Preventable
The amended petition highlights that what happened inside the classroom was not an isolated incident that no one could have anticipated.
As reported by Law&Crime, text messages included in the petition show the teacher repeatedly warned Trinity Lutheran School's director and principal that she was struggling with her mental health and feared having a breakdown in the classroom.
Rather than removing her from the schedule or providing the support she requested, the lawsuit states that school leaders continued asking her to come to work and repeatedly placed her back in the preschool classroom. Those decisions prioritized staffing needs over the safety of the children in their care.
The lawsuit describes months of missed opportunities to recognize the risks, intervene, and protect the children entrusted to the school's care.
Trinity Lutheran School's Decisions to Endanger Children
This case is not simply about the conduct of one teacher.
Preschools have a responsibility to hire qualified staff, maintain a safe environment, respond to warning signs, and intervene when children are at risk. According to the lawsuit, Trinity Lutheran School failed at each of those responsibilities by continuing to place a struggling teacher in the classroom despite repeated warnings and then failing to act when those fears became reality.
As stated in the lawsuit, the director and principal reviewed surveillance footage, delayed notifying the child's parents, failed to preserve key evidence, and allowed multiple opportunities to protect the children to pass without intervention.
As Russell Button explained in comments reported by Law&Crime, this case demonstrates what can happen when staffing concerns are placed ahead of child safety.
