Dangerous driving in Houston, TexasIf you’ve ever driven in Houston, Texas, you’ve likely had some difficult driving experiences. Whether you were stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic on the 610 Loop or struggled to change lanes across the 5-lane Katy Freeway, you’ve seen how hazardous it can become.

In the year 2020 alone, there were 97, 201 crashes in Harris County.

Our Houston car accident lawyer wants to make Houston a safer place to drive. That’s why we’ve compiled this list of safe driving practices for Houston drivers.

Safe Driving Practices for Houston Drivers

Drive the Speed Limit
This may seem obvious, but one of the not-so-great things Houstonians are known for is driving well above the speed limit. Be conscious of your speed as you drive on roads and highways.

Be Aware of Others
Don’t assume your fellow Houstonian drivers are always driving safely. Be watchful of other drivers as they may not use turn signals to change lanes or come to a complete stop at stop signs.

Check Ahead for Traffic
Houston has notoriously bad traffic. The city is the fourth most populous city in the United States. The bayou city now ranks third on the list for having the worst traffic in the country. Before heading to your destination, map your route and see if there will be heavy traffic. Consider alternate routes or allow yourself enough time to get through the traffic and safely to your destination.  Especially on days where the Houston Astros, Houston Texans, or Houston Rockets are playing a home game! Downtown and stadium areas can get packed!

Avoid Distractions
Houston is a beautiful city with tons of cool things to offer. But it’s important that you stay focused on the road while driving. Don’t look at your phone, and if it’s an emergency, pull over to a parking lot or somewhere safe and handle it there. Never use your phone on the road.

Don’t Engage in Road Rage
There have been many scary stories of road rage coming out of Houston – where people have even been seriously injured or killed. Be aware of the way other drivers behave, and if they try to argue with you, do not engage.

Put an End to Drunk Driving
Drunk driving is a serious issue in all of Texas. Texas tops the charts in drunk driving fatalities, and it needs to stop. Especially since Houston has so many options in rideshare services. Never drive buzzed or drunk, and if you ever see a friend attempting to do so, step in and order them a cab or rideshare; or offer for them to stay with you for the night. Under no circumstances is drunk or buzzed driving acceptable. It can cost innocent people their lives.

It’s important to never ignore the safety rules in place. They are there for a reason – to protect the Houston community and make it a safer place.
