How the Incident Unfolded at the Rockwall Daycare

According to the lawsuit and as described in the CBS42 story, the Saunders’ toddler was simply tapping his foot in spilled milk when an overwhelmed caregiver reacted inappropriately. The caregiver is accused of grabbing the little boy, dragging him across the classroom, and placing him in a time-out chair out of the camera’s view. The Galaxy Ranch caregiver later admitted that his head had struck an open bathroom door during the interaction.

The video shows the child crying and asking to go home, yet instead of comforting him or checking for signs of injury, the unsupervised caregiver continued her routine. Later that afternoon, the caregiver found him unresponsive and showing signs of a seizure. Nearly an hour passed between the head injury and the daycare’s call for emergency help.

Doctors discovered a skull fracture and brain bleed that required the child to be airlifted to a Dallas hospital and admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit. These are the kinds of medical emergencies that childcare safety standards are designed to prevent.

Staffing Problems and Past Warnings at Galaxy Ranch

CBS42 also highlighted concerns about staffing and oversight at Galaxy Ranch. According to the lawsuit, the caregiver had been employed at the school for only three months and was left alone with ten toddlers. The daycare had received at least one complaint about her performance, but did not document it or provide additional training.

State investigators later confirmed violations of childcare laws, including the use of prohibited punishment tactics and failing to protect children from harm. When daycares do not follow state requirements, it creates an environment where children are more likely to be seriously injured.

Media stories like the CBS42 feature help raise awareness, reminding childcare centers of their responsibilities and helping families better understand their rights.
