What Happened in the Rockwall Daycare Classroom
According to the lawsuit and as detailed in WRIC’s coverage, the Saunders’ toddler tapped his foot in milk that had spilled on the classroom floor. Instead of gently correcting him, the overwhelmed and unsupervised caregiver responded with force. The complaint states she grabbed him by the arm, dragged him into an area not visible on camera, and placed him in a time-out chair. The Galaxy Ranch caregiver later admitted that his head had hit an open bathroom door during this interaction.
Surveillance footage shows the child crying and asking to go home. Rather than checking on him or comforting him, the caregiver ignored him and continued preparing the classroom for naptime. The lawsuit also states that the caregiver repeatedly covered his head with a blanket while he lay on his cot. When she later tried to force his eyes closed, she realized he was unresponsive and showing signs consistent with a seizure.
Almost an hour passed before emergency responders were called. Doctors discovered the child had had multiple seizures, a skull fracture, and a brain bleed so severe that he had to be airlifted to a Dallas hospital and treated in the pediatric intensive care unit.
Staffing Problems and Past Warnings at Galaxy Ranch Private School
WRIC also highlighted concerns about a lack of oversight at Galaxy Ranch Private School. According to the lawsuit, the caregiver had only been at the school for three months and was left alone with the maximum number of toddlers. Galaxy Ranch had received at least one complaint about her, but did not document the issue or provide additional training.
Investigators with the Texas Health and Human Services Commission and the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services later confirmed violations of multiple childcare laws, including using prohibited punishment tactics and failing to ensure children were protected from harm.
